These counts update automatically as our records change. Outcome measures, such as referrals and actions confirmed by others, follow the rules below and are published once a second person has checked the records behind them.

Our rules for counting

  • Definitions first

Every measure has a written definition, counting rule, data source and owner before it has a value.

  • Only our own work

We do not count what hotlines, police, platforms or other charities did, even when we pointed someone to them.

  • Checked by a second person

A figure is published only after someone other than its author has checked it against the records.

  • Dated and bounded

Each figure states its period. We never add up different periods to make a bigger number.

  • Limits stated

Each measure says what it must not be read as. Most of them are about activity, not outcomes for children.

  • Corrections in public

If a published figure turns out to be wrong, we correct it on this page and say what changed.
